Steffon
Andrew Grant (born 1985, Freeport, Grand Bahama) graduated from Eight Mile Rock
High School in Grand Bahama. At age 22 he
moved to New Providence to pursue a Bachelor’s in Education from the College of
The Bahamas. Initially, Grant concentrated
on a degree in mathematics but after accepting his propensity towards the fine
arts, he transferred to the Art Department in 2008.
Compelled
to pursue advancement in art practices to compensate for years of “art
deprivation”, Grant called on his skills as a mathematician to organize his
approach to his new body of work. The artist paints reduced imagery; depicting
photographic images and collages in flat areas of bold colors; light is depicted with dark
saturated color and volume in thick contours.
In 2010, the artist was
awarded the Junior Artists Residency at Popopstudios ICVA, for which he created
a body of work that examined the role of the male in Bahamian society. Grant presently teaches art to secondary
school students in Freeport, Grand Bahama.
